A shaman, one of three brothers who share the same wife, carries out rituals of prayer and cure; a novice monk learns to be a Buddhist and struggles against worldly temptations; a rural doctor with modest training and equipment tries to look after thousands of patients; a builder shares a wife with his son, and is also building a house for her. Eight ordinary Tibetans in the town of Gyantze and a nearby village go about their lives in all four seasons and struggle to cope with the strains of their rapidly changing world .
