Marco Polo – A Very Modern Journey

To paraphrase Winston Churchill: Marco Polo is a riddle wrapped up in an enigma.

It is a mystery story: Did Marco Polo ever go to China? Did Marco Polo exist?

A story of mirrors: European eyes on China - Chinese eyes on the West.

A story of past and present. Medieval and contemporary. Of strange parallels and unexpected continuities in which the smallest clues can open doors onto vast historical vistas.

It is a travel story through some of the toughest terrain on earth. And yet is also the story of an idea, a dream, an aspiration.

Told at a time when curiosity about the East (and vice-versa) is as great as at any time since Marco Polo himself, this is a story of immense discovery.
